History

Department of Chemistry, Durgapur Government College, established in 1972, is presently one of the best centers for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in chemistry under the affiliation of the Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol. Since 1972, eminent teachers have taught in this department. Among them were Dr. Pijush Kumar Ganguly (former Director of Public Instructions, Education Directoriate, Government of West Bengal), Professor Achintya Kumar Sarkar (Recipient of Shiksha Ratna), Professor Kanailal Ghatak (Eminent Academician) and Uday Chand Ghosh (Eminent Academician). The department has cultivated significant number of researchers and teachers in its 46 year old checkered history.

Undergraduate: Since 1972, undergraduate honours and general courses are taught in this department. CBCS was introduced for undergraduate courses from the academic session 2016-17, under the affiliation of Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol. Presently, B.Sc. Honours (Chemistry) and B.Sc. Program (Chemistry) courses are offered to students by the department under the affiliation of Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol.

Post-graduate: The post- graduate course in chemistry with organic and physical specialization was introduced in the year 2008 as a post NAAC accreditation initiative under the affiliation of The University of Burdwan. From the academic session 2015 -16, post-graduate course in chemistry with Organic and Physical Specialization are offered by the department under the affiliation of Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol.

• B.Sc. Honours in Chemistry

• B.Sc. Program in Chemistry

The department offers generic elective course in Chemistry for the students of Science Honours programmes.

The department also offers post-graduate programme in Chemistry with Organic and Physical Specialization under the affiliation of Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol

• M.Sc. in Chemistry

The curriculum and syllabus of these programmes is under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) implemented by the affiliating university.

    Seminar Library with Reading Room: Total 971 books (PG=400 books and 12 Journals; UG= 571 books)] are present in the seminar library of the department. Teachers and students can borrow text as well as reference books from here. This is maintained by our faculty members.

    The department is well equipped with necessary instruments for smooth running of the existing courses. Other instruments and lab facility for the new syllabus is under consideration. The department is equipped with computer and Internet Facilities which is utilized by both the teachers and the students.
