The Journey Began in 1969

Durgapur Government College, established in 1969, stood out at the time of its inception in being the only government college serving the intellectual needs of a whole generation of young learners from Burdwan (now Paschim Bardhaman and Purba Bardhaman) Bankura, Birbhum and Purulia. Despite experiencing overwhelming changes, the institution continues to stand out as a distinguished house of learning, nurturing positive qualities of both students and staff and the only government college in the district of Paschim Bardhaman.

Implementation of CBCS :

The admission in the 2016-2017 academic session took place following the new guidelines of Kazi Nazrul University, with introduction and implementation of the ‘Choice Based Credit System’ (CBCS). The courses offered are now known as Honours and Program in B.A., B.Com, and B.Sc. in 14 subjects: Bengali, Botany, Chemistry, Commerce, Economics, English, Geology, History, Mathematics, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, Sanskrit and Zoology. The College also offers post-graduate courses in Chemistry, Conservation Biology and Geology.

Teaching, Learning and other aspects :

The teaching faculty is from the West Bengal Educational Service (WBES) and the West Bengal Senior Educational Service (WBSES) cadre. The College is keen in devising student-friendly teaching methods like use of technology, computer training, holding open air classes, open-house discussions, and interactive sessions with in-house faculty or with external experts. These initiatives have already shown positive signs with improvement in success profile of students in university and other competitive examinations. Two NSS units operate from the college, which were established in 1970 and 2008. The subject Physical Education is offered as an elective subject and students have shown outstanding performance in different sports tournaments. The college had signed a MOU with Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU) in 2007. NSS, NCC, Sports and cultural activities provide the oxygen needed to keep things going in a healthy manner and to sensitise and motivate all stakeholders to fulfil the objectives of the college.
